All 176 people on board a Ukrainian Boeing 737 aircraft died when it crashed in southern Tehran on Wednesday morning soon after it took off from the Iranian capital for Kiev following a fire in its engine.
Iranian media reports said those on board included 167 passengers and nine crew members. There were no survivors, the reports said, quoting Iranian officials.
Rescue teams and emergency services personnel rushed to the scene of the crash and a probe is underway to establish the cause of the mishap, they said.
IRNA, the official Iranian news agency, quoted a senior official in the Tehran Governor's office as saying that the wvictims included 140 Iranians while the rest were foreigners.
The pilot of the aircraft made an unsuccessful attempt to control the plane when the fire erupted, he added.
