Sufyan Sheikh becomes youngest winner of Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award

New Delhi, August 11, 2010

Sufyan Sheikh of Ahmedabad, who became the youngest person in the world to swim nine seas around the world at the age of 17 three years ago, was today named as the youngest winner of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards.

Sheikh, now 20, who won in the Water Adventure category, was one of the four winners for the awards for 2009 announced today.

The others are Kamlesh Kumar Boiunthiyal (Land Adventure), Wing Commander Jai Kishan (Air Adventure) and Chandraprabha Aitwal (Lifetime Achievement), an official press release from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said.

Ms Aitwal is one of the pioneers among Indian women mountaineers. At the age of 59, she is already on her latest expedition to Mount Jaonli in the Himalayas.

Wg Cdr Jai Kisan holds the world record of skydive landing on Mount Everest. Boiunthiyal is a regular mountaineer since 1994 and has scaled peaks like Mount Everest, Kanchanjunga, Trishuli and so on.

The awards will be conferred by President Pratibha Patil at a special function at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29, the release added.
