Nation remembers Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary

President Pratibha Patil, Vice-President M Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today led the country in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, on his 141st birth anniversary.
Ms Patil, Mr Ansari and Dr Singh were amongst those who offered floral tributes at Raj Ghat, the "samadhi" of Mahatma Gandhi, this morning.
Others present at the Raj Ghat included ruling United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani and Union Ministers.
Special prayers were held at the Gandhi Smruti later in the day, when many of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite "bhajans" were recited.
Similar functions were held in different parts of the country to mark the occasion, including Porbandar in Gujarat, where Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869.
