The title of the play is a reference to the “bendakaalu,” the boiled beans legend on the origin of Bengaluru’s name. The Hoysala King Veera Ballala II, had lost his way during a hunting expeditions and chanced upon the hut of an old woman. Taking pity on the tired and lost King, she served him a dish of boiled beans, known in Kannada as Benda Kaalu. Pleased with her kindness, the Hoysala king named the place “Benda-kaal-uru,” where the town and later metropolis came up.

The late Karnad had spoken about the city in 2012 when he confessed to being “fascinated by the vitality, energy and chaos of the city, where there is no single narrative. I wanted to write about this explosion, and the people who have come here, most of whom are rootless.”

Director Surendranath says the play speaks of a Bangalore where it is possible for everyone to cook their beans, speaking metaphorically. It captures the monstrosity that Bangalore has become, as well as the everyday happenings in the lives of its people.

The spirit, the discontentment and the anarchy of Bangalore as it appears in its bylanes is what the play captures through its dialogues and actions, he says.
