Spurt in Covid cases, Delhi cinemas closure puts a question mark on release of several movies
New Delhi, January 4, 2022
The closure of cinema halls in Delhi has put a question mark on the release of Hindi films scheduled to hit cinema screens in the coming weeks as well as the multilingual film Radhe Shyam.
Following the decision of the makers of the Shahid Kapoor-starrer Jersey and the Ram Charan Junior NTR and Ajay Devgn-starrer RRR to postpone the release of their films due to the spurt in the cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, uncertainty looms on release of Yashraj Films' Prithviraj, which is scheduled for release in cinemas on January 21; Attack, which is slated to hit cinema screens on January 27 and Radhe Shyam, which is scheduled for release on January 14.
Last week, the makers of the Shahid Kapoor-Mrunal Thakur-starrer Jersey took a decision to postpone the release of the film. The decision came after the Delhi government's announcement to shut down cinema halls in the state following a spurt in Covid-19 cases.
Subsequently, makers of the multilingual film RRR postponed the release of their film.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the makers of RRR said, "In spite of our relentless efforts, some situations are beyond our control. As many states are contemplating closing theatres, we are left with no choice but to ask you to hold on to your excitement.
'Keeping the best interests of all the involved parties in mind, we are forced to postpone our film. Our sincere thanks to all the fans and audience for their unconditional love. We promised to bring back the glory of Indian cinema at the right time. We will.'
The makers of RRR had earlier said that the film will hit the cinema screens on its scheduled date of January 7 as the closure of cinema halls in Delhi is not likely to impact collections of the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film.
However, since then the situation regarding Covid-19 has worsened in many places, including Mumbai and Chennai, threatening to force closure of cinema halls in more states.
The postponement of Jersey and RRR has created uncertainty on the release of upcoming films like Prithviraj, Attack and Radhe Shyam.
While Prithviraj, starring Akshay Kumar and former Miss World Manushi Chillar in the lead, is scheduled for release in cinemas on January 21, Radhe Shyam, starring Prabhas and Pooja Hegde in the lead, is scheduled for release on January 14 and the John Abraham- starrer Attack is scheduled for release in cinemas on January 28.
Infact, trade experts said that after the worsening Covid situation in the country, there are strong chances of postponement of Yashraj Films' big budget venture Prithviraj.
The recent days have witnessed a spurt in Covid-19 cases in many areas of the country, leading to several state governments imposing fresh restrictions, including imposition of night curfews.
Trade experts feel that the unprecedented rise in Covid-19 cases could send the film release calender haywire like it did during the second wave of Covid-19 last year.
The fresh restrictions imposed in several states are sure to impact theatrical collections in these areas and could force the makers of upcoming films to mull a postponement of the films or to decide to release the film directly on OTT.
Some of the other films scheduled for release in the coming weeks include Badhai Do, Gangubhai Kathiawadi, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Bachchan Pandey , Shamshera and Bhool Bhulaiya 2.
Earlier last year, the second wave of Covid-19 had resulted in the postponement of several big budget films like Bunty Aur Babli 2, Satyameva Jayate 2, Sooryavanshi and Haathi Mere Saathi (Hindi version).
