The rupee today hit a lifetime low of 52.43 against the US dollar in the opening session today on sustained demand for the greenback from banks and importers even though the stock market recovered, dealers at the inter bank foreign exchange said.

With the slide of the rupee to an all-time low, imports and overseas travel would cost more, dealers said.

The rupee, which slid further by 27 paise, fluctuated in a range of 52.73 and 52.33, high and low, respectively.

Yesterday, the rupee had closed at 52.16 against the dollar.
