Modi convenes meeting of economists ahead of Budget

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has convened a meeting of economists and experts at the newly set-up NITI Aayog, which has replaced the six-decade-old Planning Commission, here on February 6 to invite suggestions from the on the Union Budget for 2015-16.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will conduct the meeting, an official press release said. The Prime Minister is the Chairman of NITI Aayog.
The release said the economists and experts invited for the meeting include: Ashok Gulati, Bimal Jalan, G. N. Bajpai, Mukesh Butani, Nitin Desai, Parthasarathi Shome, Pulapare Balakrishnan, Rajiv Lall, R. Vaidyanathan, Rajiv Kumar Shankar Acharya, Subir Gokarn, Swaminathan Aiyer, T.N. Ninan, Vijay Kelkar and Dr. Y.V. Reddy. 
The meeting will also be attended by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagaria and its full-time members Bibek Debroy and V K Saraswat.
Minister of State for Planning Rao Inderjit Singh and Minister of Stat for Finance Jayant Sinha will also attend the meeting. Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian and othr senior officials from the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Finance and NITI Aayog will also be present, the release said.
Mr Modi has also convened the first meeting of the Governing Concil of the NITI Aayog here on February 8. The council comprises the Chief Ministers of all Stats and Lt Governors of Union Territories.
One of the core objectives of NITI Aayog is to strengthen cooperative federalism and Mr Modi had held consultations with Chief Ministers and Lt Governors on December 7 to discuss the objectives, functions and structure of the new body.
The release said the first meeting of the Governing Council is expected to provide further suggestions on setting up efficient processes and mechanism of interactions between Centre and States and also between NITI and other stakeholders so that synergy may be ensured between the efforts of different levels of Government and a shared national development framework emerges. 
The States have also been requested to give their suggestions to make new initiatives of Government of India like Swachh Mission, Make in India campaign, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Smart Cities, Housing for All by 2022, Digital India, Skill India, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana and so on a success, it added.
