India's eight core industries grow by 6.7% in January, 2018

India's eight core industries, which have a combined weight of 40.27 percent in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), grew by 6.7 percent in January, 2018 as compared to the same month of the previous year, an official statement said here today, quoting provisional data.
The core sector had registered a growth of 4.0 percent in the previous month, December, 2017. 
The base year of the Index of Eight Core Industries was revised from the year 2004-05 to 2011-12  from April, 2017.
The statement said the combined Index of Eight Core Industries stood at 133.1 in January, 2018. Its cumulative growth during April-January, 2017-18 was 4.3%.
According to the statement, coal production, which has a weight of 10.33% in the IIP, increased by 3.0% in January, 2018 over January, 2017. Its cumulative index increased by 1.5% during April-January, 2017-18 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Crude oil production (weight: 8.98%) declined by 3.2% in January, 2018 over January, 2017. Its cumulative index declined by 0.7% during April- January, 2017-18 from the corresponding period of the previous year.
Natural gas production (weight: 6.88%) declined by 1.0% in January, 2018 as compared to January, 2017. Its cumulative index increased by 3.5% during April-January, 2017-18 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Petroleum fefinery production (weight: 28.04%) increased by 11.0% in January, 2018 over January, 2017. Its cumulative index increased by 4.7% during April to January, 2017-18 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Fertilizers production (weight: 2.63 per cent) declined by 1.6% in January, 2018 from January, 2017. Its cumulative index declined by 0.7% during April-January, 2017-18 as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Steel production (weight: 17.92%) increased by 3.7 per cent in January, 2018 over January, 2017. Its cumulative index increased by 6.4% during April to January, 2017-18 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Cement production (weight: 5.37 per cent) increased by 20.7% in January, 2018 over January, 2017. Its cumulative index increased by 4.4% during April to January, 2017-18 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Electricity generation (weight: 19.85%) increased by 8.2% in January, 2018 over January, 2017. Its cumulative index increased by 5.4% during April to January, 2017-18 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
