German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived here last night on a two-day visit to India during which she and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will co-chair the fifth biennial Inter-Governmental Consultations between the two countries.
The two countries are slated to sign around 20 agreements after the talks between the two leaders. This will be the fifth meeting between Modi and Merkel in the past one year, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Merkel was received on her arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here by Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh.
The German Chancellor is accompanied on the visit by several Ministers and business leaders.
The agreements between the two sides are likely to be in the fields of agriculture, green urban mobility, Ayurveda, and artificial intelligence, among others.
Merkel was accorded a ceremonial reception in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning after which she will visit Rajghat and lay a wreath at the "samadhi" of Mahatma Gandhi. She will then attend a meeting with Indian women leaders from various fields such as business and law.
Merkel will meet Modi at Hyderabad House here after which the two sides will hold their 5th Inter-Governmental Consultations. This will be followed by the exchange of agreements and press statements by the two leaders.
She is also slated to hold a meeting with business leaders from both countries in the afternoon.
After a visit to Gandhi Smriti later in the afternoon, Merkel will call on President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Later, she will hold a meeting with the Prime Minister at his residence.
Tomorrow, Merkel will meet a business delegation and visit the Continental Automotive Components India Pvt Ltd at Manesar near Gurugram. She will also visit a Metro station at Dwarka in Delhi before flying out.
