Laxmikant Parsekar sworn in as Goa Chief Minister
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Laxmikant Parsekar was today sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Goa here today, succeeding Mr Manohar Parrikar, who is expected to be inducted as the Defence Minister in tomorrow's expansion of the Union Cabinet.
Mr Parsekar, 58, who was Health Minister in the Parrikar government, was administered the oaths of office and secrecy by Governor Mridula Sinha.
Mr Francis D'Souza, who was Deputy Chief Minister under Mr Parrikar, will continue to hold the same position, was among the 11 others who were sworn in today.
Mr Parrikar had sent in his resignation to the Governor this afernoon, following which the BJP Legislature Party met here and unanimously elected Mr Parsekar as its new leader and Mr D'Souza as the deputy leader.
The outgoing Chief Minister proposed Mr Parsekar's name and it was supported by Mr D'Souza, who had aimed for the top job himself after it became known that Mr Parrikar was being shifted by the BJP to the Centre.
Senior BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Reddy, who was one of the party's Central observers at the meeting, said the election of Mr Parsekar was done unanimously. "There was complete unanimity as far as the choice of leader of the legislature party was concerned," he said.
He said they had also apprised BJP President Amit Shah of the decision, after which a delegation from the party met the Governor and informed her of the resolution adopted at the meeting. The Governor then invited Mr Parsekar to form the new government.
The 12-member Council of Ministers includes two members of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP).
Yesterday evening, Mr Parrikar, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, had presided over his last Cabinet meeting and later virtually broke down as he told reporters that it was difficult for him to leave the state.
The BJP Parliamentary Board met in New Delhi today to discuss the leadership question in Goa. It is also understood that the party has decided to field Mr Parrikar as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh.
Born on July 4, 1956, Mr Parsekar did his M.Sc. and B.Ed. from the Centre of Pot-Graduation Instruction & Research, Panaji (then Bombay University) and served as the principal of the Harmal Panchakroshi Secondary School at Harmal.
Mr Parsekar, who was strong connections to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of the BJP, was elected to the Goa Legislative Assembly in June 2002 and re-elected in 2007 and 2012.
