RailTel, IIT Roorkee to set up Telecom Centre of Excellence

The public sector RailTel Corporation today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee for etablishing a Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE).
The RailTel IIT Roorkee Centre of Excellence in Telecom (RICET) will be the eighth TCOE in the country.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister for Communications & Information Technology Kapil Sibal.
RailTel will fund the TCOE through 100 per cent budgetary support over a five-year period for carrying out research and development activities in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Broadband Applications.
RailTel Corporation, which is a Mini Ratna (Category I) public sector undertaking of the Ministry of Railways, is one of the largest telecom infrastructure providers in the country with a country wide optic fiber network along Railway right of way.
The seven other TCOEs already working in the country have been established by major telecom operators in partnership with premier educational institutions like IITs and Indian Institutes of Management (IIM).
Over 28 innovations and products have been developed in various fields of telecommunication by the existing TCOEs and are available for commercial roll out. The new TCOE will be the first in North India.
RICET will work on R&D in the field of development of applications, services and technology in the domain of broadband & ICT for providing affordable services to the citizens with high network availability. This shall include in-house development of applications, customizing applications for specific use as per local requirements or through collaboration with national and international organizations and for promoting affordable broadband infrastructure in the country, an official press release said.
Some of the probable areas for Broadband Applications and Innovations shall be Development of Vernacular Language Tools to convert content into local language; Development of Cloud based e-gov, e-agri, and other e-services, the release added.
