Former Karnataka Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu, arrested in connection with an alleged land scam, was last night flown to Mumbai for cancer treatment.

Sources said Mr Katta, who was undergoing treatment at the state government run Victoria Hospital here, was shifted to Leelavathi Hospital, Mumbai.

Mr Katta, who was under judicial custody in connection with Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) land scam, was permitted by the Special Lokayukta Court to get treatment anywhere in India with Police in plain clothes guarding him. The court had rejected his bail plea on health grounds.

Mr Katta, his son, a corporator, and the Managing Director of a private firm, were arrested last month on charges of collecting huge compensation from KIADB by purchasing land at cheaper rates from farmers and later influencing KIADB to acquire the same land for a higher compensation under fictitious names.

It was alleged that the trio had collected more than Rs 350 crore through this means and had not even settled the payment to farmers from whom the land was acquired initially.
