At least 5,000 autorickshaws were off the roads today in the city's suburban areas, leading to a rush in the BEST buses as office-goers faced an uphill task in reaching offices in time.

The autorickshaw drivers have alleged "victimisation" by the Andheri Regional Transport Officer (RTO), who cracked down on them last month on the issue of tampering with fare metres.

Hundreds of autorickshaw drivers marched this morning to the state transport commissioner's office at the Bandra collectorate to press their demands, including a rise in fares and introducing share autos for short distances.

Shashank Rao of the Mumbai Autorickshawmen's Union led the rally, which culminated in a fast till 1700 hours.
