Dalit youth dies in police custody in Pali, Rajasthan

A Dalit youth, who was picked up by the police while he was allegedly wandering in suspicious circumstances late last night, has died in police custody.
A police spokesman said today Rahul Harijan of Keshav Nagar here was nabbed by the police around midnight last night. He was brought to the police station where he "fell ill" during interrogation.
He was rushed to a local hospital from where he was referred to the Bangar Hospital and then to Jodhpur Medical College Hospital.

Doctors in Jodhpur declared him brought dead, the police said, adding that the body was again being brought here for autopsy.

Meanwhile, mobs of agitated people accused the polie of torturing the youth, held demonstrations at different places in the city and also tried to "gherao" the Guda Endla police station, where the death occurred. The police used mild force to disperse the mob.

The state government--taking exception to the incident-- took swift action and held a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and took many decisions, that included suspension of six police personnel including the Station House Officer (SHO).
The entire staff of the Guda Endla police station has been transferred to police lines.
The Government has also announced a total ex-gratia payment of Rs 7 lakh to the next-of-kin of the deceased. A family member of the deceased will also be offered a government job.
The Jodhpur Divisional Commissioner has been entrusted with the inquiry into the incident, an official spokesman said.
