The much-awaited 34th National Games (NG), postponed five times, finally kicked off with a formal inauguration by Jharkhand Governor MOH Farook at the Mega Sports Complex in Hotwar here today.
A total of 6911 sportspersons from across the country have converged for the event which would continue till February 26.
Commonwealth Games gold medalist in archery, Deepika Kumari, lit the torch along with with Olympian Silbanus Dungdung, former women hockey team captain Sumrai Tete and pugilist Aruna Mishra.
Teams from all the 25 states and 8 Union territories participated in the march past. A group of girls of the state led the march past which was followed by the Armed Services team.
Welcoming sportspersons, technical staff and guests from across the country, Mr Farook said name of this state was registered in the sports history with beginning of this mega event.
Mr Farook said the sports complex with the best facilities would be used as a platform for developing sports talent. "The National Games will be a great opportunity for sportspersons to show their capability in the field of sports," he said.
"It will be a great opportunity for sportspersons to imbibe how to perform under stress and negotiate success and failure," he added.
Chief Minister and Chairman of 34th NG Arjun Munda said, despite many odds, the mega sport event was being organized with a lot of enthusiasm.
