Sudha Pillai named Member-Secretary of Planning Commission

Ms Sudha Pillai has been appointed as Member-Secretary of the Planning Commission in the rank of Minister of State, an official press release said here today.

An officer of the 1972 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) (Kerala cadre), Ms Pillai was until now the Secretary of the Commission. Earlier, she had served as Union Labour Secretary.

Born in Shimla, Ms Pillai was educated in Chandigarh. She finished her B.A. Honours degree at the age of 18 years and topped the Punjab University, securing the University Gold Medal. She went on to bag the gold medal again in Master of Arts in Psychology from the same University. Later, she completed her Master's in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in the United States.

Ms Pillai secured second rank in the IAS examination and was originally allotted to the Punjab cadre. Later, she shifted to Kerala and, among other things, learnt Malayalam on the job. She is proficient in French, English, Hindi and Punjabi.

Starting her career as Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Thiruvananthapuram, she has served as District Collector of Thiruvananthapuram, Chairman and Managing Director of Kerala Finance Corporation and Principal Secretary, Finance. At the Centre she has served in the Ministries of Industry and Corporate Affairs, Panchayati Raj and Mines.

Ms Pillai is married to Union Home Secretary G K Pillai.
