ICSI launches new syllabus for CS Foundation Programme

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India ( ICSI), a professional body established by an Act of Parliament to develop and regulate the profession of company Secretaries, launched a new syllabus for the CS Foundation Programme here today.
 
An official press release said the programme consists of four papers - Business Environment and Entrepreneurship; Business Management, Ethics and Communication; Business Economics; and Fundamentals of Accounting and Auditing.
 
Under the new syllabus, Optical Marks Recognition (OMR)-based examination (objective type multiple choice questions) would be conducted for the Foundation Programme. The students are eligible to appear in the examination on the basis of self study. The requirement of Coaching Completion Certificate has been discontinued for Foundation Programme Students.

More than 4500 receive awards of Diplomate of National Board

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today expressed deep anguish over the fact that female foeticide and neglect of the girl child were still prevalent in the country, leading to an adverse sex ratio.

Addressing the 17th convocation of the National Board of Examinations here, Kumar said that, for effective coverage, the country urgently needed high quality medical professionals willing to serve in the villages and inaccessible areas.
 
“As we move ahead into the 12th Five-Year Plan in April 2012, we should look forward to setting new benchmarks in health indicators such as reduction of maternal and infant mortality rates, improving women and child health and addressing the issue of child sex ratio in the 0-6 year age group to ensure adequate care and nurturing for the girl child.
 
"I am confident that this batch of doctors graduating today will join me in resolving to condemn and eradicate the reprehensible practice of sex selection," she said.

Dell invites entries from university students for Social Innovation Challenge

Computer hardware company Dell and the University of Texas at Austin's RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service have invited entries from university students across the globe for the 2012 Dell Social Innovation Challenge (DSIC).

This is the sixth year that the two are working together to help fuel the spirit of the brightest young entrepreneurial minds, a press release from Dell said here today.
 
The DSIC is open to university students across the globe who have a passion to innovate and solve social or environmental issues. All the projects, at any stage in development, created by February 13, 2012 will be eligible for the Grand Prize. 

“Youth to the Edge” launched to promote adventure activities in North-East

A pilot project, “Youth to the Edge” was launched today at the Indian Mountaineering Foundation ((IMF) by Union Minister for Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER) Paban Singh Ghatowar to promote adventure activities in the remote areas of the North-East.

Volunteers from National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will participate in the adventure activities under the project, an official press release said.
 
It said the states in the North-Eastern region offer tremendous potential for various adventure/ outdoor activities such as mountaineering, trekking & camping,  rock climbing & rappelling, Jeep safaris, cultural tours, village / home stay, community tourism, bird watching, angling, water skiing, white water rafting / canoeing / kayaking and so on.

ASB and CII to organize masterclass in Kerala on building alumni network

For the first time, the Asian School of Business (ASB) here in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is bringing the concept of "masterclass" to Kerala.

The masterclass programme, that will train the heads of institutions and faculty members on fine-tuning their skills in different streams of management and technology, is scheduled at the ASB campus in Technocity, Pallipuram, here on January 23.
 
Similar master classes, that are gaining popularity among the B-schools across the world, have been successfully held earlier in Gurgaon, Delhi and Pune.

Social media burnout visible amid youth in urban India: ASSOCHAM survey

Youngsters in urban India have started experiencing social-media fatigue as they tend to log onto social networks like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Orkut, Linkedin, Myspace and others less frequently than earlier when they had initially signed up, according to a recently concluded survey.
 
The survey was carried out by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) under the aegis of ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation (ASDF) to examine current usage trends vis-à-vis social networks among youngsters and time spent on these websites.
 
A press release from the industry said ASSOCHAM representatives interacted with about 2,000 youngsters (equal number of male and female) in the age group of 12 years to 25 years in the cities of Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune between October and December 2011.

Nine management students win Citi Woman Leader Awards 2011-12

Banking and financial services major Citibank India today awarded nine first year management students from leading business schools in the country with the Citi Woman Leader Award 2011-12 and named nine others as runners-up.

NTPC Foundation sets up ICT Centre for disabled students at Gauhati University

The public sector power major NTPC has set up an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Cenre at the Department of Disability Studies in Gauhati University in Assam.

The centre, which was inaugurated by Assam Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi yesterday, is aimed at encouraging students with disability to pursue higher education in the field of science and technology.
 
"It is a memorable day as this centre shall help differently abled students to pursue higher education in science and technology," Bordoloi said.
 
He said the ICT centre would serve physically challenged students of society by helping them in capacity building by offering vocational courses through latest software and equipment.

UPSC to hold NDA & Naval Academy Exam on April 15

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will hold the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy Examination (I), 2012 on April 15, 2012, for admission to Army, Navy and Air force Wings of the NDA for 129th Course and for the 91st Indian Naval Academy Course(INAC) commencing from December, 2012.
 
An official press release said candidates are required to apply only through online mode. No other mode is allowed for submission of application.
 
For details regarding the eligibility conditions, syllabus and scheme of the examination, centres of examination, guidelines for filling up online application form and so on, aspirants must refer to the detailed notice of the examination published in the Employment News/Rozgar Samachar dated December 31, 2011 or the UPSC website, the release added.

AICTE to conduct first Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) during Feb 20-28

The All India Council for Technical Edition (AICTE) will conduct its first-ever Common Management Admission Test (CMAT-2012) between February 20 and 28, 2012.
 
The test is aimed at reducing the burden of students attending to multiple examinations in different parts of the country and help the students to select suitable students for admission to management programmes approved by the AICTE.
 
"This initiative has been taken to address the issue of physical, mental and financial stress being imposed on the students through number of entrance examinations conducted by the institutions for admission to Management Programmes in AICTE-approved institutions based on relevant judgments in the Hon’ble Supreme Court," an official press release said.
 
CMAT-2012 will be conducted online in two shifts between February 20 and 28 in 61 cities/locations. The scores awarded will be used for admission in the post-graduate management programmes, both at degree and diploma levels, all over India for the year 2012-13.
 
The release said the respective Secretaries of states dealing with technical education and Vice Chancellors of the universities have been requested to advise the competent authority for admissions in their respective States and jurisdiction to use the merit list of CMAT-2012 for allotment of students in the AICTE-approved management institutions for academic year 2012-13.
 
The institutions and State governments are required to register online free of charge for opting to CMAT-2012 scores for admissions for academic year 2012-13. The minority institutions shall effect admissions as per the provision available for such categories.
 
These AICTE-approved programmes account for more than 4 lakh sanctioned seats.
 
Registration for CMAT 2012 will open on December 9, 2011 and close on January 9, 2012.

ICWAI signs MoU with CISI of UK

The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), United Kingdom  on awarding the membership of CISI to ICWAI members and concessional fee for ICWAI students. 

The MoU was signed by M. Gopalakrishnan, President, ICWAI and by Simon Culhane, Chief Executive, CISI in Mumbai on Thursday.
 
Mr Gopalakrishnan said the accord would pave the way for long-term cooperation in the field of management accounting, risk management, assets servicing, global securities operations and investment in both countries. 

Cabinet nod for amendments to Bill on unfair practices in educational institutions

 

The Union Cabinet today approved the official amendment to the Prohibition of Unfair Practices in Technical Educational Institutions, Medical Educational Institutions and Universities Bill, 2010 based on the recommendations of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development for consideration of the Parliament.
 
An official press release said the Bill aims to provide an institutional mechanism for preventing, prohibiting and punishing unfair practices in technical and medical educational institutions and universities. 
 
The object is to curtail the element of profiteering in some institutions which are presently beyond the scope of any such regulation. The institutions are also expected to mandatorily disclose information related to admission process by publication of its prospectus. This would bring about public accountability of such institutions and act as a check on use of unfair practices being adopted vis-a-vis students, the release said.

USIEF to organise US Universities Fair in Delhi on Nov 5

The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), in collaboration with the Institute of International Education (IIE), is organizing a US Universities Fair here on November 5 in which representatives from 27 American universities will be participating.
 
The fair will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at The Park Hotel, Parliament Street, Connaught Place, New Delhi.
 
The representatives of the US will offer detailed information about their institutions and programs. The participating universities represent a wide geographical area in the U.S. and offer a range of academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, a press release from the US Embassy in Ne Delhi said.
 
Students can also avail themselves of one-on-one sessions with admissions officers and get reliable and authentic information about their programs. 
 
Students will not be offered on-the-spot admission, but information and guidance provided by the university representatives, as well as parallel sessions throughout the fair hours, will help students make informed choices about colleges and programs.
 
Students may also be able to collect application forms, brochures, and other materials from these institutional representatives. Admission is free.

External review of IIMs to be undertaken every three years

There will be an external review of each Indian Institute of Management (IIM) every three years, which would be discussed in the IIM Council.

This was decided at a meeting of the IIM Council chaired by Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal here today.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeshari, the Secretary, Higher Education, the Chairpersons and Directors of the IIMs and senior officials of the Ministry.

An official press release said the meeting reviewed the progress in the establishment of the new IIMs. It was mentioned that land issues in respect of all new IIMs had been resolved.

Cabinet okays proposal for seeking directions for convergence of NMEICT, NKN

The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal for seeking directions for achieving convergence and synergy under the Centrally Sponsored Plan Scheme, National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), and National Knowledge Network (NKN) and other issues.
 
An official press release said the Cabinet further gave its approval for: 
 
(i) Shifting the technology from Copper wire based connectivity to Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) based connectivity in respect of already connected universities / university level institutions ex post facto and connecting the remaining universities / university level institutions on OFC with provisioning of 400 nodes of LAN on an average to every university / university level institutions (including private universities) and providing connectivity to 25000+ colleges and 2000 polytechnics as against 18000 colleges already approved by CCEA in January, 2009. 
 
(ii) The estimated cost for providing connectivity to 2000 polytechnics will be Rs.13.50 crore per year.

(iii) Raising the number of universities and institutions of national importance to be provided connectivity (utilising NMEICT and NKN) from 419 to 572 (419 under NMEICT and 153 under NKN). 
 
(iv) Installation of routers and switches as part of LAN in all universities in NMEICT List as per the specifications indicated by NKN. 
 
(v) Entrusting a feasibility study to NIC for connecting all 25,000+ colleges and Polytechnics to NKN on optical fibre and bringing all colleges in the country to NKN through optical fibre. 
 
(vi) All technical aspects and architecture would be managed by NIC as the implementing agency for NKN for seamless integration between the two networks. 
 
Students and learners of about 572 universities, 25000+ colleges and 2000 polytechnics will be benefited from the scheme, the release said.
 
The ultimate target is to provide last-mile connectivity and provide high quality e-content to be used with the connectivity being provided to the Universities and Colleges across the country. 
 
E-content being generated under NMEICT Scheme would be effectively used by the students and learners in an any time any where mode, the release added.

Cabinet nod for Regional Centre for Biotechnology under UNESCO auspices

The Union Cabinet today approved the enactment of the requisite legislation for establishment of the Regional Centre for Biotechnology Training and Education under the auspices of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The decision takes into account the fact that modern biotechnology has been recognised globally as a rapidly advancing science wherein molecular techniques and process are employed to develop health care solutions for human and animal sector, for agriculture and environment technologies.

The proposed Centre will engage students in research by integrating science, engineering and medicine with a view to create high quality human resource in disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas, an official press release said.

HCL Learning forays into management education in association with Annamalai University

HCL Learning, the education and talent development division of HCL Infosystems Ltd., today said it had entered into an alliance with the Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu for launching an MBA-IMS Programme (Infrastructure Management & Security).

M Aslam takes over as acting IGNOU Vice-Chancellor

Prof M Aslam today assumed charge as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

He succeeded Mr V N Rajsekharan Pillai who completed his five-year tenure yesterday, a statement said here.

Mr Aslam is the Director of the School of Continuing Education and professor of rural development studies at the university since 1992.

Govt. issues advisory for students going for courses in CIS/Eurasia region

The Government today advised Indian students planning to pursue courses in the CIS/Eurasia region to satisfy themselves about physical safety and living conditions, standards of education, recognition of degrees and certificates and other factors before taking a decision.

An advisory issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said students should also check the general credentials offering the courses and also the prevailing atmosphere at those universities and institutions in question.

The advisory was issued after it came to the notice of the Ministry that a number of Indian students were either pursuing or planning to take up a range of short-term (upto three years or less) courses, including medical courses, at various universities and institutes in some countries of the Eurasia/CIS region.

NIFT and FIT, New York to launch dual degree programme

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), New York have finalised a dual degree programme at the undergraduate level between them.

An official press release said that this meant that selected meritorious students from NIFT would avail the opportunity to obtain a joint degree awarded both by NIFT and FIT.

The association of the two premier fashion institutes would reap benefits which would be multifold in nature and the agreement would be implemented at the earliest for the benefit of NIFT students, an official press release said.

India, US to hold expanded Higher Education Dialogue as annual event

Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton yesterday launched the expanded US-India Higher Edcation Dialogue as an annual bilateral event to map out strategies for partnership in the field of education between the two countries.

The Dialogue should identify areas for mutually beneficial exchanges and provide a platform for intense and meaningful collaboration among academia, the private sector, and government on both sides, a joint statement issued by the two sides said after the US-India Higher Education Summit.

US Education Mission, led by Suresh Kumar, to visit India from Oct 10-15

A United States Education Mission, led by Suresh Kumar, Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Director General of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service, will visit India from October 10-15 to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in this area.
