India's forest and tree cover put at 78.29 m ha, 23.8% of geographical area

India's forest and tree cover has been put at 78.29 million hectares (ha), which is 23.81 per cent of the country's geographical area, according to the India State of Forest Report 2011,

The report was released at a function here today by T Chatterjee, Secretary, Ministry of Environment & Forests.
 
In comparison to the 2009 assessment, after taking into account the interpretational changes, there is a decrease of 367 square km in country’s forest cover, an official press release said.
 
The report said 15 states have registered aggregate increase of 5000 sq km in their forest cover, with Punjab leading with an increase of 100 sq km.
