77% polling in Punjab, 70% in Uttarakhand to elect new legislative assemblies
New Delhi, January 30, 2012
About 77 per cent of the electorate in Punjab and 70 per cent of the voters in Uttarakhand turned out to exercise their franchise in elections to choose new legislative assemblies in the two states.
Polling began on a dull note but the momentum picked up through the course of the day as voters formed long queues outside many of the polling stations.
Polling was by and large peaceful in both the states, where the authorities had made elaborate security arrangements.
The two states are among the five going to the polls in crucial assembly elections between January-end and early March. Polling was held in Manipur on January 28, while polling is due to be held on March 3 in Goa. Polling will be conducted in seven phases in Uttar Pradesh between February 8 and March 3.
