Well-known writer Salman Rushdie, who was forced to pull out of the Jaipur Literary Festival (JLF), citing security threats, today could not make his much-anticipated video address to the gathering after Muslim groups staged protests which gave rise to fears of violence.

The organisers of JLF met with leaders of the protesters, who told them that "even seeing his face" was an issue, after which they decided to call of the video address, scheduled for 3.45 pm.

Sanjay Roy, one of the organisers, announced the cancellation, saying people had entered the venue to disrupt proceedings.

“Some organisations have threatened violence. This is unfortunate, but necessary to avoid violence. It is a fairly iditoic situation. We are once again stepping down from the fight for freedom of expression. We have been pushed to the wall again,” he said.
