Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, son of Beant Singh - one of the two assassins of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, will contest the Punjab Assembly election as an independent candidate from the Bassi Pathana reserved constituency in this district.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance has fielded Justice (retd) Nirmal Singh, former Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court, from this constituency.

On being contacted by UNI yesterday, Sarabjit Singh said he had prepared himself to contest election from Bassi Pathana.

Earlier, there was speculation that former MP Simranjit Singh Mann- led Shiromani Akali Dal(Amritsar) will field Sarabjit (32), a resident of Mohali, from Bassi Pathana as he was close to Mann and SAD (Panch Pardhani) senior leader Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema.

The SAD (Amritsar) has already announced that it will field Dharam Singh Kalaur from Bassi Pathana.

Sarabjit had unsuccessfully contested the last Lok Sabha election in from Bathinda and the 2007 Assembly election from Bhadaur as a nominee of Mann's party.
