A day after the Shiromani Akali Dal's (SAD) leader Didar Singh Bhatti joined the People's Party of Punjab (PPP), the party faced another jolt when former Minister and Rupnagar district party president Tara Singh Ladal resigned from the primary membership of the SAD.

He announced his decision to quit the SAD at a press conference here yesterday.

Saying he had remained loyal to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the SAD for the last three decades, Mr Ladal said he had decided to resign "in view of the present circumstances".

Becoming emotional while announcing the resignation, the former
Minister said, "I am resigning from the party with heavy heart."

Mr Ladal, a two-time MLA from the area, said he would disclose the reasons for his resignation and further course of action on January 6 or 7.

Although, it is learnt that he was unhappy over denial of the party ticket from Rupnagar constituency, he is also believed to have been upset over being "sidelined" by the party for the last many years.

Earlier, Anandpur Sahib MLA Sant Ajit Singh, former SGPC member Jarnail Singh Aulakh and their supporters had resigned from the party over allotment of ticket from Rupnagar constituency to the the Chief Minister's former adviser Daljit Singh Cheema.
