With the beginning of the New Year, nine new districts started functioning in Chhattisgarh from today, official sources said.

The total number of districts in the state has risen to 27 from 18 following the creation of Sukma, Kondagaon, Gariaband, Baloda Bazar, Mungeli, Balod, Bemetara, Surajpur and Balrampur.

Greeting the people on the occasion, Chief Minister Raman Singh said the division of Raipur, Durg, Sarguja, Bastar, Bilaspur and Dantewada districts had been made to bring the administration closer to the people and ensure speedy development of the region.

However, the new districts will formally be inaugurated by the Chief Minister between January 10 and 22.

A year before the 2008 Assembly elections in the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party regime, led by Raman Singh, created two new districts -- Kanker and Narayanpur - by bifurcating the Naxalism-affected Bastar and Dantewada districts.
