Controversial Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjiv Bhatt has refuted the claims made by former Minister of State for Home Gordhan Zadaphia about the post-Godhra riots of 2002 in Gujarat.

In a letter sent yesterday to the Nanavati Commission, probing the riots, Bhatt said Zadaphia, during his deposition before the panel, had lied that he was not informed of the fact that the bodies of the "karsevaks" and other victims of the Godhra train carnage of February 27, 2002 were being brought to Ahmedabad.

He said Zadaphia had also lied that he was not informed about the on-going violence at Gulberg Society and Naroda Patiya in Ahmedabad.

Bhatt also refuted Zadaphia's claim that the phone call details of police officials, bureaucrats and politicians during the riots provided by IPS officer Rahul Sharma are incorrect.

Bhatt has annexed copies of some of the relevant documents in support of his claim that Zadaphia lied before the commission.

He claimed that the annexed documents would illustrate that both Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Zadaphia were kept contemporaneously informed about the decision of bringing dead bodies to Ahmedabad and the likely repercussions of the said administrative decision as well as the on-going violence at Gulberg Society and other places in Ahmedabad during his tenure as Deputy Commissioner in the State Intelligence Bureau.
