5 killed, 7 burnt in explosion at firecrackers unit in Kerala

Five people were charred to death and seven others suffered burn injuries, three of them seriously, when a fireworks manufacturing unit caught fire at Athani in this district of Kerala today.
Four of the deceased were identified as Anil, Babelu, a native of Bihar, Vasupillai and the licencee of the fireworks unit Joffi, police said, adding one of the victims was yet to be identified.
The cause of the mishap was not known and investigations were going on, the sources said, adding the unit had licence still 2014.
The injured, identified as Sajeesh, Jayan, Prasad, Vijayan, Madhavan, Pazhanimla and Devassya, father of the deceased Joffi, were admitted to the Medical college hospital here, the sources added.
Following the impact of fire and subsequent impact of the explosion of high density crackers, window panes of houses upto two km away were broken.
The location of the unit at an isolated place posed difficulties for rescue teams. Fire tenders and other vehicles found it difficult to reach the spot to fight the flames and to shift the injured to hospitals, the sources added.
