A 23-year-old student from India was shot at close range at Salford street in Manchester in the United Kingdom yesterday.

Police said the student was in a group of nine students, all from India, when he was shot dead.

He was approached by two white men in the early hours and shot in the head after a short conversation, police said without giving details of the incident.

The gunman was said to be white, in his mid-20s and of slim build. He fled towards Asgard Drive after the killing.

Police said the parents of the student, who are in India, have been informed about the incident.

Greater Manchester Police said the Indian group who were with the student during the incident have given initial witness statement about the crime.

BBC quoted Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan as saying that he "didn't want to go into details" about the conversation the student had with the gunman.

"This appears to be an unprovoked attack and we can't establish motive behind the incident at this time," he said.

The BBC quoted the official as saying, "This appears to be an unprovoked attack and we can't establish a motive at this time. We are investigating every possible aspect and we are in the early stages of the investigation but we are not ruling anything out."

The force has increased patrols in the area and officers from Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team are working alongside neighbourhood officials investigating the incident, the BBC said.
