PM, Karnataka leaders condole Bangarappa's death

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today condoled the death of former Karnataka Chief Minister and former MP S Bangarappa at Bangalore earlier in the day.

In a message to Bangarappa's wife Shakuntlamma, Singh said the former Chief Minister would be remembered for his commitment and contribution to the welfare of the backward classes.

He said Bangarappa was a widely respected leader who worked selflessly for the welfare of the people of Karnataka and the development of the state.

"Entering politics as a member of the Assembly from Sorab, in Shimoga district in 1967, he had impressed all by his hard work. He became a Minister in the state in 1979 and rose to become Karnataka's Chief Minister in 1990.

"He was elected to the Lok Sabha thrice and will be remembered for his commitment and contribution to the welfare of the backward classes," Singh said.

Several leaders from the state including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan condoled Bangarappa's death and said it was a sad day for the people of the state, especially the backward classes.
