Former Karnataka chief minister S Bangarappa passes away

Former Karnataka chief minister Sarekoppa Bangarappa died here today in a multi-speciality hospital following a brief illness.
 
He was 79. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.
 
Bangarappa, a prominent Congress leader from Shimoga district, which has given a record number of four Chief Ministers, was the chief minister of Karnataka during 1990-92.
 
He died of kidney failure. He had been admitted to Mallya Hospital about 10 days ago and his condition deteriorated during the past few days. He passed away at 0040 hrs, family sources said.
 
Born on October 26, 1932, Bangarappa, who had tested his political fortunes in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a long stint in Congress, had recently joined the H D Devegowda-led Janata Dal (Secular). The three time Lok Sabha member represented Shimoga constituency and has been a legislator several times.
 
In his political career spanning over 50 years, Bangarappa had founded Karnataka Vikas Party and Karnataka Congress Party, both of which did not do very well.
