Sadananda Gowda elected to Karnataka Legislative Council
Bangalore, December 22, 2011
Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda today registered a thumping victory in the bye-election to the Legislative Council from the State Assembly constituency, defeating Anand Gaddadevarmath of the Congress by 54 votes.
It was a cakewalk for the 58-year-old Gowda, as Janata Dal (Secular) legislators, numbering 26, abstained from voting. Out of 225 members, 199 voted with Mr Gowda securing 123 votes and Gaddadevarmath securing 69. In all, seven votes were rejected, including that of K G Bandi of the BJP, who had displayed openly his candidate of choice.
With partymen celebrating his victory, Gowda described his win as a party victory and said it enthused him further to work for the party and the government. He thanked all those who were responsible for the victory.
Gowda, a Lok Sabha Member representing Chikmagalur-Udupi constituency, had to be elected to either house of the State Legislature within six months after he was sworn in on August 4 as the successor to former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who was shown the door by the BJP central leadership on corruption charges.
Despite pre-poll hiccups like fears of supporters of former Minister Gali Janardhana Reddy, now in a Hyderabad jail in a case related to alleged illegal mining of iron ore, possibly voting against him, Gowda cruised to a comfortable victory.
