Kerala pleads with SC to ask PM to intervene in Mullaperiyar dam issue

The Kerala government today urged the Supreme Court to ask Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene to resolve its issue on Mullaperiyar dam with Tamil Nadu.

A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice D K Jain, however, did not pass any order when Tamil Nadu's counsel told the court that a meeting of the empowered committee appointed by the apex court on the dam issue under the chairmanship of former Chief Justice A S Anand is due to take place tomorrow.

The two south Indian states are locked in a fierce legal and political battle over the dam.

Kerala government wants a new dam to replace the century-old dam, contending that any damage might lead to a huge loss of life and property in Kerala. Tamil Nadu government wants to retain the existing dam as it is the main source of irrigation for farmers
in several parts of the state.

Early this week, the Supreme Court had dismissed the application of Kerala government seeking directions to lower the height of the dam, while Tamil Nadu withdrew its application seeking the court's order to Kerala government not to create panic on the issue.

The apex court had pulled up both the states, saying that they were adding fuel to the fire instead of dousing it.
