Former Haryana Minister Chiranji Lal Sharma passes away

Former Haryana Minister and ex-MP Chiranji Lal Sharma, father of Haryana Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Sharma, died here today. He was 88.
 
Sharma breathed his last in a private hospital here early today.
 
He was elected to Haryana Assembly in 1972 as a Congress MLA from Sonepat and was made a Cabinet Minister. He held the portfolios of Revenue, Public Works (Building and Roads), Technical Education and Education.
 
In 1980, he won the Karnal Lok Sabha seat and thereafter he was elected from the same Parliamentary constituency thrice.
 
Born in a simple family at Ahulana village in Sonepat district on September 13, 1923, he studied in Hindu College, Delhi and Law College, Delhi and graduated with Honours in English and did LL B. 
 
He distinguished himself as an elocutionist and a good orator. Apart from being an educationist and a social worker, he practised law from 1949 and became a leading criminal lawyer of repute.
 
Sharma had served as senior Vice President of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee for ten years and also served as President of Sonipat District Congress Committee for an equal number of years.
