An 18-month-old boy, who fell into a 20-feet deep abandoned borewell at Bingidoddi village in Mehboobnagar district of Andhra Pradeash while playing yesterday was rescued by police and revenue officials after a six-hour operation.

The boy, Tirumalesh, clung on to life during the operation which involved the digging of a hole parallel to the borewell and scooping him out alive.

The panic-stricken parents of the boy informed the police and district administration and they had rushed to the spot, along with medical staff.

The rescue team sent oxygen to the boy through pipes to keep him alive and the boy responded and cried in the pit throughout the six-hour operation. He was finally brought out at 2230 hours yesterday.

The boy was provided first aid after he was brought out and later shifted in an ambulance to Gadwal Hospital.

He had suffered minor injuries but his condition was stated to be stable by doctors attending on him.

The villagers had dug the bore well to get water for their fields but had later abandoned it.

State Information and Public Relations Minister D K Aruna and the District Collector supervised the rescue operations.

Talking to reporters later, Ms Aruna said, "We are happy as we could rescue the boy, I have no words to express my feelings after seeing the sobbing parents. I continuously prayed to the Almighty to save the boy. We will take action against the people who left the borewell abandoned."
