A "sarpanch" belonging to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) allegedly slapped a woman teacher at Daula village in this district.
The incident occurred when a delegation of teachers wanted to submit a memorandum to Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal at a fuction in the village yesterday.
The delegation was asked by the Akali workers to leave the place but they insisted that they would leave only after submitting the memorandum.
Village sarpanch Balwinder Singh later slapped one of the teachers, identified as Varinder Kaur. The teachers later lodged a complaint against Balwinder seeking his arrest.
Meanwhile, Ms Badal today strongly condemned the incident and demanded a probe into the matter.
In a statement, she said the assault of a woman teacher by any functionary was not acceptable, whatever may be the provocation for that.
The MP asked the administration to probe the whole incident and take necessary action against the guilty. Ms Badal also expressed regret for this "unpleasant" incident.
