Sriramulu wins in Karnataka bye-election, BJP loses deposit

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today suffered an ignominous defeat in the Bellary Rural Assembly bye-elections which former minister B Sriramulu (Independent) won with a huge margin of 46,790 votes.
 
The battle, considered mainly between the former BJP leader and the ruling party, saw the BJP nominee Gadilingappa finishing a poor third after the Congress candidate Ramprasad in a fiercely fought election.
 
Mr Sriramulu, who quit the Assenbly seat and the BJP for not having been given a berth in the D V Sadanda Gowda Ministry, had decided to contest as an independent.
