The Election Commission today said that bye-elections would be held on December 22 to fill up a vacancy each from Assam and Bihar in the Rajya Sabha.

The vacancies were caused due to the death of a sitting member of the House from Assam, Mr Silvius Condpan on October 10, 2011 and the resignation of sitting member of the House from Bihar, Mr Sabir Ali, on November 15, 2011.

The terms of office of the two members would expire on April 2, 2016 and April 9, 2014, respectively.

An official press release said the notifications for the bye-elections would be issued on December 5 and the last date for making nominations would be December 12.

Counting of votes will be taken up on December 22 after the end of polling at 5 pm, the release added.
