The Lok Bhalai Party (LBP), headed by former union minister Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, today announced its merger with the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab ahead of the assembly elections in the state.
Mr Ramoowalia made the announcement in the presence of Chief Minister and SAD patron Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal at a rally here today.
"From now onwards, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal will be our president and Mr Parkash Singh Badal will be our patron," Mr Ramoowalia said while addressing the rally after the announcement of LBP's merger with SAD.
Mr Sukhbir Badal said the return of Mr Ramoowalia to the SAD fold was like a homecoming. The SAD would become stronger after the merger of the LBP with it, he said.
"The SAD will now rule in Punjab for 50 years consecutively instead of 25 years as I used to say earlier," he added.
Chief Minister Badal, who had stated that SAD was ready to make alliance with any party to defeat the Congress in the state, had yesterday appealed to Mr Ramoowalia to merge his party with SAD.
