1 killed in jail clash at Kapurthala in Punjab

At least one prisoner was reportedly killed and more than 10 injured in a firing incident at Modern Jail at Theh Kanjala here today.
However, official sources confirmed the death of two prisoners.
One of the injured prisoners, Parwinder Singh who was brought to the local civil hospital for treatment of bullet injuries, claimed that three prisoners were killed in the firing incident and many prisoners were injured.
Parwinder Singh told media in the hospital that trouble arose when a prisoner died in the hospital in the jail.
This agitated the prisoners and they ransacked the hospital building and damaged it and also set it on fire.
The jail wardens and police fired at the protesting inmates, resulting in the bullet injuries to many prisoners.
According to official sources, one prisoner died in the hospital inside the jail today and the inmates staged a protest, alleging negligence by the doctor.
He said inmates also attacked at the Jail Superintendent and Deputy Jail superintendent and other jail staff when they tried to control the situation.
However, the jail staff received minor injuries in the clash with the inmates. When the situation went out of control, the jail staff and police fired at the prisoners to control the situation resulting in the death of one prisoner and injuries to one dozen prisoners.
The jail authorities shifted ten prisoners with bullet injuries to the local civil hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Dr Harkesh Singh Sidhu has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the firing incident in the jail and deputed local SDM Anupam Kaler to inquire into the incident.
Deputy Commissioner Harkesh Singh Sidhu, in a release, confirmed the death of one prisoner and injuries to 11 prisoners in the incident.
