Four bodies have so far been recovered after a hanging footbridge over river Kameng collapsed in the market area of Seppa town in East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh last evening.

Police said today that the toll might go up further as a massive search operation continued to trace people reported to be missing.

Several people fell into the river after the collapse and might have been washed away downstream by the strong current, they said.

The incident occurred around 1700 hours yesterday when the children gathered on the bridge to catch a type of flying insects. The bridge was about 60-70 metres long, police said.

To a query about the number of victims, police said, "It is not possible to say how many had assembled there. However, the search operation is on and details are awaited."

Local villagers, police and divers were working on a war-footing and the Army had also been pressed into service.

Police said five people had been rescued so far, of whom the seriously injured had been rushed to hospitals.
