3 killed as college bus hits scooter, group of pilgrims in Chandigarh

Three persons, including a woman, were killed and a dozen others suffered injuries when a college bus hit a scooter and then ran over a group of pilgrims here last night.

The accident occurred when the bus belonging to thee Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Landran, hit the scooter first and later ran over a dozen members of a "jatha", which was on its way from Sector 22 Gurdwara to famous Nada Sahib Gurdwara in Panchkula at around 2300 hrs.

The deceased were identified as Anita (32), her nephew Jatin (12) and his friend Mandeep (18), who were riding the scooter. The injured were admitted to various hospitals in the city.

Later, other members of the "jatha" set the bus on fire. Two fire tenders were pressed into service to control the blaze.

Bus driver Jasbir Singh fled from the spot while police nabbed its conductor Sunil. Police registered a case and started investigations, police added.
