Delhi businesman arrested for allegedly stage-managing robbery in own house

The Delhi Police today said it had arrested a businessman who allegedly stage-managed a robbery in his house three days ago to make up for the huge losses he suffered in forward trading of gold at the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX).

The businessman was identified as Tarun Kumar Khandelwal (35). The police also said they had arrested three other persons - Salim (23), Suraj (22) and Monu (20) - who he had engaged for carrying out the robbery at his residence in the posh Safdarjung Enclave area here on August 20. One person, Khursheed, 28, was said to be absconding.

The police said they had recovered the entire looted property, including diamond, gold and silver jewellery worth several lakhs of rupees, from them.

Khandelwal had reported to the police that, around 1.30 p.m. on August 30, while he was at his house with his wife and younger sister, three persons had entered the house on the pretext of repairing the gas pipeline and overpowered them after threatening them with weapons. He said they had locked them inside a bathroom and robbed the jewellery from the almirahs of his wife and grandmother.

During their investigation, the police found that Khandelwal was on his mobile telephone continuously though he had claimed that his hands were tied by the robbers. When he was interrogated on this discrepancy, the police said he broke down and admitted to have hatched a conspiracy to rob his own house in association with the other accused persons.

He is alleged to have said that his main motive was to get at the jewellery and valuables kept in an almirah by his grandmother, who had died a few years ago.
