India gets consular access to Vijay Kumar in Houston

India has got consular access to Mumbai-based documentary film-maker Vijay Kumar who was arrested at the Houston airport in Texas in the United States on August 20, allegedly for carrying brass knuckles, a prohibited item under the laws of that state.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement here today that, immediately upon learning of the incident, the Consulate General of India (CGI), Houston, had contacted the concerned local authorities, members of the Indian community who knew Mr Kumar and the individual himself.

Mr Kumar is currently lodged at the Immigration Holding Facility (IHF) in Houston, the statement said.

According to it, on August 25, a representative of the CGI met Mr. Kumar and spent about 40 minutes with him. "He appeared to be in good health," it said.

The statement said investigations were currently going on and the matter was sub judice.

"CGI would remain actively engaged in the matter, to provide necessary consular assistance to Mr. Kumar and to satisfy itself that the case is handled expeditiously," the statement added.
