India's infrastructure sector grows by 3.9 % in July

India's six core industries grew by 3.9 per cent in July this year as compared to 3.2 per cent in the same month of 2009, an official statement said here today, quoting provisional data.

The six core indutries had registered a growth rate of 3.4 per cent in June this year.

During April-July this year, the six core industries achieved a growth of 4.5 per cent as against 4 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

The index of six core industries, which have a combined weight of 26.7 per cent in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), stood at 257.6 in July, 2010, the statement said.

According to the provisional data, crude oil production, which has a weight of 4.17 per cent in the IIP, registered a growth of 15.8% in July 2010 as compared to (-)0.4% in July 2009. Crude oil production grew by 8.4% during April-July 2010-11 as against (-)1.0% during the same period of 2009-10.

In the case of petroleum refinery production, which has a weight of 2% in the IIP, the growth was 13.7 per cent in July this year as compared to (-)14.4% in July 2009. This segement grew by 7.3% during April-July 2010-11 as against (-)6.9% during the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

Coal production (weight of 3.2% in the IIP) registered a growth of 4.5% in July this year as against a growth rate of 10.5% in July 2009. It grew by 0.9% during April-July 2010-11 compared to an increase of 12.4% during the same period of 2009-10.

Electricity generation, which has a weight of 10.17% in the IIP, notched up a growth of 3.8% in July 2010, which was the same as in July 2009. This segment grew by 5.2% during April-July 2010-11 as compared to 5.3% during the same period of 2009-10.

Cement production, which has a weight of 1.99% in the IIP, declined by 0.2%in July this year as compared to a growth of 13.8% in the same month of last year. Cement production grew by 5.2% during April-July 2010-11 as compared to an increase of 12.5% during the same period of 2009-10.

Finished (carbon) steel production (weight of 5.13% in the IIP) declined by 0.9% in July 2010 compared to an estimated 4% in July 2009. This segment grew by 2.5% during April-July 2010-11 compared to an increase of 2.3% during the same period of 2009-10, the provisional data showed.
