PM congratulates shooter Tejaswini Sawant for gold at World Championship

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today congratulated Indian woman shooter Tejaswini Sawant who has become the first woman shooter to win a gold at the World Shooting Championship with a world-record equalling score in the 50m rifle prone event in Munich on Sunday.


In his message, Dr Singh said that her outstanding performance had brought laurels to the nation and her acheivement would inspire other youngsters to do their best for the country.


The 29-year-old Sawant, who belongs to Kolhapur in Maharashtra, notched up a score of 597/600 in the event, equalling in the process the record set by Russia's Marinia Bobkova in 1998. She had won two gold medals in Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.
