    Andhra University, Visakhapatnam - Established in 1926 as one of the first residential and teaching-cum-affiliating universities, offers 313 courses in Arts, Commerce, Management, Science & Technology, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy and Education, has five constituent colleges and four campuses, also offers distance education programmes, has 636 affiliated colleges in five districts.

    University of Delhi - Established in 1922, has grown into one of the largest universities in India with 14 faculties, 86 academic departments and 79 colleges spread all over Delhi, with about 2,20,000 students.

    Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi - Central University, set up in the 1970s with Nehruvian objectives, situated on a 1000-acre campus,has ten schools and three centres.

    Jamia Hamdard, Delhi - Deemed to be a university, inaugurated in August, 1989, conceived as a seat of higher learning in Unani Medicine, Islamic Studies, Biosciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and other areas of knowledge by its founder, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, also offers undergraduate and post-graduate courses in information technology, business management and physiotherapy

    Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU) - Founded by Maharaja Pratapsinghrao Gaekwad, named after his grandfather Maharaja Sayajirao Gakewad who first mooted the idea of a university in Baroda, offers education from kindergarten to doctorate levels on one campus, a residential and unitary university, has more than 35,000 students.

    Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra - Established in 1956 as a unitary residential university, located in the holy city of Kurukshetra, has grown into a multi-faculty university and one of the premier centres for advanced study and research in the region.

    Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam - Established in October, 1983, caters to higher education needs of the Central Kerala districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki as well as parts of Pathanamthitta and Alapuzha districts, has main campus at Athirampuzha near Kottayam and seven satellite campuses, offers more than 400 courses through 22 departments, 22 engineering colleges, one law college, three medical colleges and others.

    University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram - Established in 1937 as the University of Travancore, caters to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alapuzha and parts of Pathanamthitta district, has 16 faculties and 41 departments, 157 affiliated institutions, including two colleges of law, 17 of engineering, four medical colleges and two fine arts colleges.

    University of Calicut, Kozhikode - Established in 1968 to serve northern districts of Kerala, has 27 post-graduate departements and 286 affiliated colleges.

    Jiwaji University, Gwalior - Established in May, 1964, has post-graduate schools in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Earth Science, Economics, Ancient History, Culture and Archaelogy, Biochemistry, Commerce and Management, has more than 100 affiliated colleges.

    Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar - A Central University in Madhya Pradesh, formerly University of Saugar, established in 1946, situated 5 Km. east of Sagar city, has 830 hectares campus on Patharia Hills, has 36 University teaching departments, 10 faculties and 81 affiliated colleges covering 6 revenue districts of the state.

    Pondicherry University - A Central University, has affiliated colleges in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

    Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Mullana, Ambala - A deemed-to-be university, offfers courses in engineering, computer applications, dental sciences, physiotherapy, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and management.

    Panjab University, Chandigarh - Established in 1882 at Lahore, relocated to its present campus in 1956, has 51 departments, 10 centres/chairs, more than 170 affiliated colleges, regional centres at Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur and the Vishweshavaranand Vishva Bandhu Institute of Sanskrit and Indological Studies (VVBIS&IS) at Hoshiarpur.

    Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok - Established in 1995, the first such government-private initiative in the region, constituent units include Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, College of Physiotherapy, College of Nursing, School of Basic and Applied Sciences and Directorate of Distance Education.

    Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai - Established in 1966, has 18 Schools comprising 73 Departments, its Directorate of Distance Education has about 1.3 lakh students, has 109 affiliated Colleges.

    Anna University, Chennai - Established in September, 1978, offers higher education in engineering, technology and allied sciences, formed by integrating College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet and three technological departments of the University of Madras, has brought into its fold about 225 self-financing engineering colleges, six government colleges and others in different parts of Tamil Nadu.

    Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), Lucknow - Established by the government of Uttar Pradesh in May, 2000, offers B. Tech., MBA, MCA, B. Arch., B. Pharma., BHMCT, M. Tech. and Ph.D. programmes through more than 230 affiliated colleges.
